Washington — General Motors Co. said Friday it is recalling nearly 4,000 2012 cars for potentially faulty driver airbags that could fail to deploy.
The recall covers an estimated 3,700 2012 Buick Verano, Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic vehicles, GM spokesman Alan Adler said.
The Detroit automaker caught most of the models in dealer showrooms before customers bought them. The automaker knows of no crashes where the airbags failed to deploy.
GM submitted the recall notice on Oct. 30, which has been posted on a Canadian government website. The notice said the recall covered an estimated 500 vehicles in Canada.
GM said in the notice posted on Canada's website that "the primary stage of the driver's airbag may not deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted). Failure of an airbag to deploy correctly could increase the risk of personal injury to the seat occupant." Dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration still hasn't posted the recall. Unlike Canada, the U.S. government can take a week or longer before making an automaker recall public.
